We partner with the Nova Scotia Department of Labour and Advanced Education, the Department of Community Services, the Antigonish Career Resource Centre and the St. Francis Xavier University Enterprise Development Centre (XEDC) to provide participants with opportunities to develop the nine literacy and essential skills needed for work, learning and life. These skills include the following: Reading, Document Use, Numeracy, Writing, Oral Communication, Computer Use, Working with Others, Thinking Skills and Continuous Learning. The Government of Canada’s Office of Literacy and Essential Skills maintain that proficiency in these skills provides the foundation for learning all other skills. They are the skills that enable us to succeed in our jobs and adapt to workplace change; they also enable us to evolve in our personal lives and contribute to our communities.
Bridging to Employment Career Specific (BECS) Program
- BECS is a program offered by the Antigonish County Adult Learning Association (ACALA) in partnership with the Antigonish Career Resource Centre, the Department of Community Services, and the Department of Labor and Advanced Education
- Aimed at attaching individual participants to employment opportunities in the local area, each program is geared to bridge the gaps in the resume of adult workers. Participants are offered the opportunity to take certification courses, such as Emergency and Standard First Aid and CPR, WHMIS, Portfolio Development and Food Handlers, along with life skills training for the workplace. They also experience an 8 week work placement with a partnering employer in their sector of interest.
- There is no cost to learners or partnering employers to participate in this program
